The ABCs of Death for Halloween!

abcs-of-deathSplendid Cinema teaches you the ABCs

This Halloween, we’re going back to school with the bizarre international horror treat, The ABCs of Death, screening at Splendid Cinema on 27 October.

The project was ambitious: 26 horror directors were chosen and each given a letter of the alphabet. Each director had to select a word which began with that letter and then make a short film based on that idea.

Some of these short films are clever, some stupid; some gross, others chilling; some hysterical and some offensive. With 26 different directors, the film is uneven, of course, but also guaranteed to give something to everyone.

Directors include Xavier Gens, Angela Bettis, Nobou Iguchi, Jorge Michal Grau, Yoshihiro Nishimura, Ti West, Adam Wingard & Ben Wheatley. If none of those names are familiar, The ABCs of Death includes work from the directors of Machine Girl, May, Amer, Tokyo Gore Police, Shutter, A Serbian Film, Evil Aliens, Sightseers and House of the Devil. In total, work from 14 different countries is included: Mexico, Japan, France, Chile Spain, Norway, Denmark, Thailand, Serbia, Indonesia, Canada, Australia as well as from the USA & UK.

Here’s the bonkers trailer!

The screening starts at Worcester Arts Workshop on Sansome Street at 6.30pm with the box office open from 6pm. Tickets are £5 in advance or on the door with Café Bliss open for a pre-show treat.

Sound City (Dave Grohl, 2013) on 13 October

Marking the directorial debut of the former Nirvana drummer and the frontman of Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl, Sound City (2013), is a documentary which illuminates the music industry from the inside..

Central to the success of this particular recording studio in the 1970s and throughout the 80s and into the 90s, Sound City’s sound was created by the unique Neve mixing console. When the studio closed shop in 2011, Dave Grohl enlisted the help of dozens of fellow musicians to tell the story of the particular mixing board, and by extension, to tell the story of some of the most iconic American albums recorded between 1970 and 2011.

Some of the records recorded here include those by Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Foreigner, Rick Springfield, Pat Benetar, The Grateful Dead, REO Speedwagon, Dio, Ratt, Nirvana, Metallica and Rage Against the Machine. Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Trent Reznor, John Fogerty, Neil Young and Tom Petty all make appearances in the film.

This is a fascinating story about the music most of us grew up with, and to witness the collective action to save an icon of American music which most music fans wouldn’t even be aware of.
